The Segments, the band that formed in Kyiv in 2019 with four fellow musicians who found a shared language quickly. Konstantin Garbar, known as the driving force behind <a href="spotify:artist:0oeu11ioiA5XPgs0fzBY5N" data-name="The Room Without Sun">The Room Without Sun</a> — one of the pioneering underground post-punk acts in Ukraine in the 2010s — brings that same restless energy to The Segments. Within months they released their debut EP High and Low, a record that balanced melancholy and noise in equal measure, drawing on the post-punk and new wave traditions of the 90s while sounding entirely their own. Then the world had other plans. What followed was a debut album written through a pandemic and finished in Kyiv during a war. Above the Noise carries all of that weight without announcing it — it's a guitar record, a headphones record, a record for people who know that loud and sad aren't opposites.
